Our Birmingham fostering team and foster carers got together with their local MP to celebrate Foster Care Fortnight 2015. The event was a great opportunity to recognize the amazing work of foster carers and to support those interested in fostering to learn more.
Richard Burden, MP for Northfield, attended the lunch event to show his support for the Birmingham fostering team. “I was delighted to attend the event hosted by Capstone Foster Care in Kings Norton in support of Foster Care Fortnight. Foster carers deserve to be recognised for the amazing work they do in supporting young people to have a brighter future.”
There is currently a shortage of 900 foster carers across the West Midlands. Birmingham fostering teams are especially looking for foster carers who can support sibling groups, and teenagers. Social Worker Manisha Mistry said; “Often children in care have been through a difficult time. At Capstone we offer support and training to enable carers to foster young people. It’s normal for children to come into care with their siblings, which is why we are always looking for people with more than 1 spare room.”
Richard Burden expressed his opinion on the shortage of carers in the midlands; “It is very concerning that in our community there is a shortage of around 900 foster carers. Supporting teams like Capstone Foster Care is really important to ensure that we promote fostering to anyone who may be able to support a local child. It was great meet people at this event who are considering fostering – and who had the chance to discuss this further with the fostering team and other foster carers.”
Recruitment Co-ordinator Alison Williams said: “It was great to host this event to show our appreciation to foster carers, and it was a great excuse to invite anyone thinking of fostering to find out more. We were thrilled that our local MP could also come along and celebrate Foster Care Fortnight with us and encourage the local community to find out more.
Richard Burden added, “There is an enormous amount of support and training available for those interested in making a difference to the lives of children across Birmingham. I would urge anyone in this area who has been thinking about fostering to find out more.”
